CD2 Diagramma

Diagramma was recorded in 2006/2007 and was The Rebel Wheel's debut album on 10T. It had no over-riding concept but did have another epic song, the 25 minute title track. By this the time the band had pretty well moved away from midi-based instruments and playing live into sequencers but they did program a lot of lo-fi odd-meter drum loops to play along-side the live instruments. The band used a lot of virtual instruments and this album features quite a few of them, including Native Instrument's "B4", G-Force's powerful mellotron emulator "M-Tron" and Linplug's "Albino" among a host of others.

The album was recorded in two segments. The first was David tracking most of the parts himself at his home studio (Threads, Tempra, Three Valley Gap, Diagramma Suite and Hiding In Waiting). This is the version available at the Rebel Wheel online store.

The second segment happened after David signed a deal with 10T records. Here the band tracked the tunes Arachnophobia and Awakened with Matthew Thomas at Shattered Wing studios and forged a working relationship with him that continues to this day.

Typically David writes the music and the whole band plays a large part in arranging it, but on this album, Gary Lauzon, along with former band-mates Chuck Ho and Greg Kampf wrote Arachnophobia and Paul Joannis wrote Awakened. The album graphics were done by Steve Carrol from 10T Records. The album was officially released June 16th 2007 to much critical acclaim and began a new era for The Rebel Wheel. It still remains a favorite for many of the band's fans.

You can buy the original version of the CD or download it from the Rebel Wheel online store. This version does not contain Arachnophobia nor Awakened. It is also available at Germany's Rostfrei Records along with the entire Rebel Wheel catalog.

You can buy the extended version containing Arachnophobia and Awakened from 10T

Album Tracks

Threads

The title track of the CD, David performed all the parts except some of the drums which were heavily edited loops of Greg Bissonette's sampled performances (they were in 4/4 but got changed to 5/4) via RMX. It has been a staple of The Rebel Wheel's live shows ever since and introduced them to a host of international fans.

Three Valley Gap

An instrumental inspired by the actual place in the Rockies. David passed that place a million times when he worked for the Canadian Pacific Railroad on extra gang #1. "My back still aches when I hear that word".

Diagramma Suite

This is the epic suite for the album (a tried and true format for the 1st three releases). This time the band incorporated electronic loops, drum machines, real drums, acoustic and electric guitars along with the ubiquitous mellotron, electric piano and hammond organ, in an odd-metered chaotic outing. Ranging from jazz to pastoral folk to fusion to traditional Prog, this track exemplifies what Rebel Wheel is and has remained a favourite of fans around the world.

Tempra

The Rebel Wheel wanted to do a fusion-y piece and this was the result. The unison keyboard and guitar lines are angular, dissonant and twist and turn in unpredictable ways.

Hiding In Waiting

This song was originally written win the 1970s and was one of the earliest songs David wrote. This recorded version stays pretty true to the original idea.

Tempra Live.

To compare the studio version against a live band setting (always fun), check out ths youtube video of the trio version of the band band live at Zaphod's

CD2 Diagramma Lyrics

Threads

I'm amazed, I'm beside myself, you blame everybody else

He helps those who can help themselves? Well

Help yourself to another line.

I can't read your mind, see inside your head

But between the lines, I can see the thread

There's a place, maybe far from here

Better than any other place

When you arrive you're still haunted, ghosts

Come from inside yourself

I can't read your mind, see inside your head

But between the lines, I can see the thread

Hide your head in the sand and you, always

come out number one.

Look inside, you can see yourself, hide

From the truth outside.

I can't read your mind, see inside your head

But between the lines, I can see the thread

Diagramma

1st

I have nothing to hide, gave it all to you.

Left with nothing inside, when it all was through.

Saw that look in your eyes that time you turned away

And the silence of night, is my own.

Feel the wind on your face, as the stars fall down.

Feel your body erase, as we leave the ground.

We have nothing to hide, as we tumble down.

Saw that look in your eyes was for me.

2nd,

Sometimes I think I can see through walls

Sometimes I think I can see it all

I fade away, it fades away, I fall away, it falls away

I need today, I need to say.

Conditions, demands, conditions, demands.

Demand and desire.

Sometimes I think I can sense you near,

Sometimes I think I can smell the fear.

I fade away, it fades away, I fall away, it falls away

I need today, I need to say.

Conditions, demands, conditions, demands.

Demand and desire.

3rd

Out on the streets, ten stories to go

Laughing like a king disguised.

A crowd gathers, a hat passes 'round.

No silent assembly in this silent town.

Keep on passing those open windows.

Life is serious, but art is fun.

Out on the street, ten stories below.

Laying like a clown disguised,

A crowd gathers, a sigh passes 'round.

A silent assembly on this sacred ground.

Keep on passing those open windows.

Life is serious, but art is fun.

Hiding in Waiting

I saw the dancer fall, in my dreams, in the darkness

I have had troubled sleep, hiding deep, in some madness.

These things won't pass.

They'll always last, hiding in waiting.

I saw the mountains fall, from the seas, to the desert.

I've had a troubled heart, from the start, of this journey.

These things won't pass.

They'll always last, hiding in waiting.
