CD1 The Rebel Wheel

The self-titled debut album "The Rebel Wheel" was recorded in Toronto and Ottawa from 1991-2003 and featured midi performances from a variety of musicians. Cab Lind, Per Lind, and David Campbell performed the drums and percussion on samplers, drum machines, acoustic kits and tuned and untuned percussion. David Campbell and Pelle Vadim performed the bass tracks with guitar synths, synths and real basses. Nils Bell and David Campbell performed the keyboard parts on a variety of midi keyboards and samplers and David Campbell performed the guitars.

The album was recorded at Fiction Music Production's studios and produced by David Campbell for Rostfrei Records. Biangio Pinna's illusion art was used by permission for the cover and CD art. The other graphics and photos were done by Pelle.

While the epic piece "Crystal Rain Suite" as well as the popular 1oz were written and recorded in Ottawa by David in 2003, the rest of the album was done in Toronto from 1991-1995 with the band. The first section after the ambient intro of The Crystal Rain Suite features themes developed from a much earlier piece called "Whore's Breakfast" (written in Vancouver BC and Brockville ON in 1979-1980). The current Rebel Wheel album uses the same themes and developments and takes them one step farther yet and in fact is named after the piece of music itself.

The album has been long out of print but it can now be downloaded from the Rebel Wheel online store.

Album Tracks

1 OZ.

This song evolved out of the acoustic intro and like Moebius Strip, has a section that features an ostinato riff that ends where it starts. David built this track up over the course of a few days in his brand new home studio with his brand new G5 back in Ottawa 2003. The future is foreshadowed in the middle section where he is interrupted and the recorded exchange kept.

Thunder Herd

Laughingly dismissed by reviewers at Garageband as mad circus music, this piece is a fusiony outing and probably the closest the band ever got to their idols Bruford's Earthworks band. It was performed live via various midi controllers into an Atari 1040 running Notator back in 1992.

Moebius Strip

Another live off the floor into an Atari outing. This time the keys, drums and synth bass were recorded live and the guitars laid down later. Nowadays loops are so common as to be annoying, but back in 1991, they hadn't quite worn out their welcome and this one is compositional not machine-based (meaning the band played the ostinato part to death as opposed to pushing a button and letting a machine play it to death). As a Moebius strip is a loop and Escher a huge influence on the band, it only made sense to title it accordingly.

Organ Grinder

A short fast little number recorded live to a barely functional TEAC 4-track reel to reel with a Roland electronic drum-kit, a gtr and a Korg M1. The conga break in the middle is a Roland U-20 and some furious key slapping. As David's guitar amp was elsewhere at the time the guitar was played through a Rat distortion pedal and routed into a cheap stereo. The stereo speakers were then mic'd and recorded to dat along with the pre-recorded TEAC tracks. It was all very primitive but still usuable.

The Crystal Rain Suite

This epic tune features Glen Olander's Crystal synth for the ambient parts. The song goes from ambient washes to poppier songs via some fusion and almost classical moments.

Acquiring Glass Friends

This track was not on the original pressing of the CD but is included as a bonus track on the download. It was originally released on Giant For A Day by The Gorgg gang. It pays homage to Gentle Giant using some of the more obvious signatures of their sound and approach.

Crystal Rain Suite

Part 1 Crystal Rain pt1 (instrumental)

Part 2 Innocence pt1

I don't believe it, what did she say?

I can't pretend I wasn't listening anyway.

No voices echo, inside my car

As I drive silent through the night to where you are.

We traded all our innocence

and now we find we've nothing left.

No silken ties, we've cut that rope.

I know to much to hold much hope.

I hope she's happy, in her place.

I still remember the sunlight on her face.

I hope she wonders, sometimes of me.

No point in counting on the "wait and see"

We traded all our innocence

and now we find we've nothing left.

No silken ties, we've cut that rope.

I know to much to hold much hope.

Part 3 Whore's Breakfast (instrumental)

Part 4 Brothers (lyrics by David Crawford)

We are brothers I hear it said

but it doesn't look that way to me

Can I take you out to tea?

Why the gun?

Why to me?

No-one escapes this merry-go-round alive.

We are brothers, Cain and Able

watch your back, watch your back.

Blood is thicker than water.

Blood is mostly water.

The tribe is on the move again

No thought for the unfit left behind.

Time to get back in line.

Defend good.

End evil.

No-one escapes this merry-go-round alive.

We are brothers, Cain and Able

watch your back, watch your back.

Blood is thicker than water.

Blood is mostly water.

Part 4 Crystal Rain pt2 (instrumental)

Part 5 The Itch (instrumental)

Part 6 DV82XL

I don't know why you're waiting

wond'ring if they'll call.

Surely you know all they want is

all you have.

Those empty moments

you spend 'til they respond

when all the questions were beyond

them anyway.

DV82XL

you're life is your wishing well

All you need to break the spell

is open up your eyes

DV82XL

do it weird but do it well.

All you need to break the spell is

DV82XL.

I meet your eyes and they,

show me your disgrace.

All your tender expectations are tears

upon your face.

They choose your ward-robe,

they influence your mind.

leave you in shadows.

the blind leading the blind.

DV82XL

you're life is your wishing well

All you need to break the spell

is open up your eyes

DV82XL

do it weird but do it well.

All you need to break the spell is

DV82XL.

I meet your eyes and they,

show me your disgrace.

All your tender expectations are tears

upon your face.

They choose your ward-robe,

they influence your mind.

leave you in shadows.

the blind leading the blind.

DV82XL

you're life is your wishing well

All you need to break the spell

is open up your eyes

DV82XL

do it weird but do it well.

All you need to break the spell is

DV82XL.

Part 7 Crystal Rain pt3 (instrumental)

Part 8 Innocence pt 2

I don't believe it, what did she say?

I can't pretend I wasn't listening anyway.

No voices echo, inside my car

As I drive silent through the night to where you are.

We traded all our innocence

and now we find we've nothing left.

No silken ties, we've cut that rope.

I know to much to hold much hope.
